Fill-in-the-blank knowledge test question

A fill-in-the-blank question is a text exercise in which letters, syllables, words or parts of sentences have been omitted. Learners must fill in the missing parts of the text.

Create a fill-in-the-blank question

These instructions will help you to create a fill-in-the-blank question quickly and in a structured manner.

1

Select the question type “Fill-in-the-blank” in the knowledge test question wizard. Enter a Title and specify the Language in the editing window.

2

Under the Parameters tab, you can optionally add an external reference and keywords for thematic categorization, and set Possible points between 1 and 20.

3

Under the Question tab, you can select a design template for creating a question or start with a blank page.

4

Arrange the desired elements such as Question, Answer area, and Feedback using drag-and-drop. Add Comments for correct and incorrect answers. Optionally, you can add an Information text, insert a background image, or customize the layout by editing HTML/CSS.

5

In the text editor for the fill-in-the-blank question, click on the gap icon to insert a new gap at the desired location in the text.

In the window that opens, select one of the four available gap variants:

  • Free text blank
  • Question involving a range
  • Dropdown blank
  • Drag and drop blank

Only one option can be selected per gap. However, you can combine different types of gaps within a question.

6

Save your entries.

Possible gap variants

  • Enter up to 10 correct answers.
  • If necessary, enter a custom width in pixels.
  • Tick the box if you want to distinguish between upper and lower case letters.
